Custom Cat Blanket From a Photo: Tips, Sizes and Styles

By Sophie, co-founder of Beast + Bonbon. Updated October 2026.

Short answer: Yes, you can get a custom cat blanket made from a photo. Our designers create your cat's portrait from your picture and check the markings by hand, then it is woven from 100% cotton yarn in the USA. You see a free design proof by email within 24 hours. Sizes run from $105 to $165, and a cat and a dog can share one blanket.

This guide is for cat people: owners who want their cat on the sofa in woven form, and friends shopping for someone whose cat runs the house. We get asked a lot whether we only work with dogs. We do not. Cats are some of our favorite portraits to make, stripes, whiskers and all.

Can you make a custom blanket of a cat, not just a dog?

Yes. A cat portrait blanket is made the same way as a dog one: you send a photo, our designers create the portrait, and nothing is woven until you approve the design. Tabbies, tuxedos, calicos, black cats, long-haired Persians and one-eyed rescues all work.

Cats matter to their people as much as dogs do. In a 2023 Pew Research Center survey, 97% of US pet owners said their pets are part of the family. A blanket with your cat on it simply says that out loud, in cotton.

What makes a cat portrait look right is the detail. Our designers pay close attention to:

  • Markings: the M on a tabby's forehead, the white bib on a tuxedo, the patches on a calico.
  • Eyes: the shape and expression, which is often what makes a cat look like themselves.
  • Coat length: a sleek short coat and a fluffy long coat need different shading in the weave.
  • Little quirks: a bent ear, a crooked whisker, a notch from a street life before they found you.

How do you get a good photo of a cat who will not sit still?

The easiest way is to photograph your cat when they are already still: asleep, sunbathing or watching birds from the window. You do not need a professional shot. A clear phone photo in daylight is usually enough.

  • Wait for the nap. A sleepy cat on a sofa arm or windowsill gives you time to get close.
  • Use daylight. Stand with the window behind you so the light falls on their face. Turn off the flash, which can turn eyes glowing green.
  • Get down to their level. Hold the phone at eye height, not from above, so the face is not squashed.
  • Make a small sound. A crinkle or a soft click often gets you two seconds of ears up and eyes open.
  • Take a burst. Hold the shutter down and pick the sharpest frame later.
  • Show the markings. If one photo shows the face and another shows the pattern on their back, send both.

Can a cat and a dog go on the same blanket?

Yes. You can put up to 3 pets on one blanket, in any mix of cats, dogs or other pets, each with their name. The photos can be taken separately. Our designers place each pet in the layout so they sit together naturally, even if your cat would never tolerate that in real life.

The number of pets helps decide the size. Here is a simple guide:

Size Dimensions Price Good for
Small 52" x 37" $105 One cat, a lap throw, a reading chair or the cat's own spot
Medium (best seller) 60" x 50" $125 One or two pets, a sofa throw that covers two people
Large 80" x 60" $165 Two or three pets, the foot of a bed, or a wall hanging

Our post on putting two or three pets on one custom blanket explains how the layout works when your pets look very different in size.

Why do cats like a woven cotton blanket?

Cats look for soft, warm places that smell like home, and a cotton throw on the sofa or bed checks every box. Most cat owners know the rule: put a new blanket down and the cat will be on it within the hour.

  • It breathes. Cotton is a natural fiber, so it stays comfortable for a warm cat curled up for a long nap.
  • It lives where they do. A throw over the sofa back or across the bed sits right in a cat's favorite spots.
  • It is easy to live with. Cat hair brushes or shakes off cotton easily, so the throw stays tidy on the sofa.
  • The picture is part of the fabric. Woven, not printed, the portrait is made of the yarn itself, so there is no printed layer to fade, crack or peel.

One small tip: like any woven textile, a claw can catch a loop. If it happens, ease the thread gently back into the weave rather than cutting it. Keeping claws trimmed helps too.
